2011 is 10th anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers (IYV+10). Amongst the many activities and events planned to commemorate the year, United Nation Volunteers (UNV) plan to produce a children’s book on volunteerism. UNV want to illustrate the diversity of volunteerism with a global representation of impressions, thoughts and experiences of the next generation of volunteers.

The Illustrating volunteerism project aims to engage children aged 4 to 11 from diverse cultural and geographical backgrounds to draw, paint or write short stories about their ideas and experiences of volunteerism, community participation and community support. Children might not use these technical terms, words and phrases but they are an important element of what volunteerism is all about. Therefore, capturing their thoughts and experiences is vital.

The ultimate goal is to collect  a selection of drawings, short stories or even just sentences about volunteerism from various different countries in their national languages. Selected contributions will be compiled and published in the form of a book. The rest of the drawings will be photographed and uploaded into either social media pages, the IYV+10 website or www.worldvolunteerweb.org

This project would be a good activity for Beaver and Cub age sections. We would therefore encourage you to spread this information within your associations so that our young members can have their voices heard. To find all the details on how to participate please download the following briefing document (available in English, French and Spanish)
