Opening their daily newspaper ‘De Standaard’ (DS) on 17 August 2011, members of FOS Open Scouting (one of the five members of the Belgian Guide and Scout Federation) and other readers were probably surprised to see a full-page colour advertisement for FOS Open Scouting.

The newspaper reaches over 300’000 readers in the Flemish speaking parts of Belgium and an ad like this would normally cost some EUR 30’000 or more, but in fact, the campaign is part of this year’s Solidarity Award of DS.

NGOs and civil society organisations from across Flanders had been invited to send in an ad and from the hundreds of applications, FOS Open Scouting’s proposal is among the 24 campaigns short–listed by a jury for this year.

FOS Ad in De Standaard (17 August 2011)Developed and designed by FOS Open Scouting with their partner Pirana Concepts, the campaign focuses on the way of life Scouting opens:

“A Scout. That’s obvious.” – the slogan reads. And the main message follows: ”Have you ever been a Scout or Guide? Let’s see. Scouting is forever in your heart.  You carry it with you and it rewards you all your life. FOS Open Scouting offers 50 groups across Flanders and Brussels, which would like to welcome your daughter and son. You want to try it? Have a look at and find the FOS group in your heart.”

The final winner will be selected based on online votes and the announcement is due at the end of August 2011. The winning NGO will be offered three additional full-page advertisements in DS during the autumn.
